Nevado Del Ruiz is located is located on the border of the departments of Caldas and Tolima in Colombia, about 129 kilometers west of the capital city Bogotá.

Nevado del Ruiz lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is a region that encircles the Pacific ocean and contains some of the world’s most active Volcano. The Nevado Del Ruiz sits on the boundary between the oceanic Nazca plate and the continental South American plate. This is a converging plate boundary. This means that the two plates were moving towards one another and they collided with one plate being pushed beneath the other. This collision had caused the volcano to erupt.
