Earthquakes

LI: Students can explain the geomorphic hazard earthquakes including, its causes, impacts and responses.

PowerPoint: Earthquakes

Information sheet: Students to read and glue in information sheet about Earthquakes (Teachstarter). Students will tick what they already knew and put a question mark at a sentence they don’t understand.

Discussion: Where do earthquakes usually occur?

Identification: Using a map of the world, students will label where earthquakes usually occur.

Notes: The outer layer of the Earth is broken up into tectonic plates. When these plates move in a way that is stressful to the Earth’s layers, rocks are broken and move, resulting in an earthquake. Earthquakes commonly occur on the boundaries of the plates: one plate will be forced under another, causing the geomorphic hazard. Plates may move away from each other, causing the land to subside between the two plates. Plates can also grind past each other, causing major damage when movement occurs.

Handout and discussion: The effects of earthquakes.

Handout and discussion: discussion of management strategies to reduce the future impact of similar natural hazard events including the role of technology in monitoring and predicting geomorphic hazards

Research task: Students tocomplete a research activity on the Japan 2011 Earthquake.

Content:

  • investigate ONE contemporary geomorphic hazard including causes, impacts and responses, for example: (ACHGK053)

  • description of the spatial distribution of the disaster

  • explanation of geomorphic processes causing the disaster and its impacts

  • examination of the responses of individuals, groups and government to the impact of the disaster
