Changing landscapes

LI:Students will investigate the human causes and effects of land degradation.

PowerPoint: Changing landscapes

Notes: The Earth is dynamic. It is constantly moving and changing, transforming landscapes and landforms. The characteristics of most places are influenced by a combination of environmental processes, such as flooding and earthquakes, and human processes, such as mining and construction of cities. Some of these changes are very slow and take place over millions of years, for example, the formation of the Grand Canyon in the US state of Arizona. Other changes take place very quickly, as did the formation of a new island in the South Pacific, just four months after the eruption of an underwater volcano in Tonga.

Examples: Two examples provided in the PowerPoint presentation. Discuss the Grand Canyon and the island Nuku’alofa in the South Pacific.

Discussion: How do we (as humans) change our landscapes and landforms?

Example: Pictures provided of Palm Jumeirah. Discuss its man-made creation in Dubai.
